The United Way of Northern Cameron County is currently seeking volunteers for the 2016 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) project. VITA is a free service and will aid qualifying local residents in claiming their tax refund dollars. Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS as tax preparers and work at a local VITA site during the tax season preparing basic income tax returns for low to moderate income families.
Last year this project brought in $3.6 million of Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) to Cameron County residents. These tax credits are federal benefits that go directly into our local economy. Your assistance to working families ensures that they receive all the benefits they are entitled to while avoiding costly fees.
Volunteers are needed to assist with VITA sites located in Harlingen, San Benito & La Feria.
Volunteer hours are flexible and depend on the volunteer’s availability. Experience with tax preparation is not required. Volunteer responsibilities will include greeting, screening and/or tax preparation.
Training starts November 14, so please call the United Way of Northern Cameron County office at (956) 423-5954 to register as a volunteer or to get more information.
